Chapter 1

Wildwoods

Poochy joinsCrazee DayzeePoochy Nose

Golden path

  1. A large living book named Mr. E falls from the sky onto Yoshi's island. After the introduction sequence, you take control of Yoshi on the opening page of Wildwoods. Run right and pick up the three basics: Flutter Jump (hold jump mid-air to slow descent), egg throw (aim with the right stick, release to throw), and licking up objects with the tongue button.
  2. Poochy bounds onto the page early in Chapter 1 and joins you as a permanent companion — he runs alongside Yoshi and barks whenever a hidden creature is nearby. Pay attention to which direction he sniffs when he pauses; he is pointing at something worth investigating. You cannot lose Poochy and he never needs managing.
  3. The first creature you encounter is a Crazee Dayzee — a flower-faced critter wandering the forest floor. Complete all three basic interactions: lick it up, throw an egg at it, and stand on it. Each unique interaction completes one entry in Mr. E's Discovery list. The bottom-left corner of the screen shows your Discovery progress for the current page.
  4. Smiley Flowers are scattered throughout each page — some visible, others hidden in clouds, question blocks, or walls that light up when Yoshi licks them. Collect five to unlock your first exploration tool: Poochy Nose, which makes Poochy bark more insistently near undiscovered creatures.
  5. Progress through the Wildwoods pages by reaching the Discovery target shown in the bottom-left corner for each page. When the target is met, the page-end trigger activates — walk into it to advance. Do not rush past creatures before interacting; come back and complete their entries before leaving.
  6. The Big Discovery at the end of Wildwoods reveals Mr. E's purpose: he was created by a professor to record and protect every creature from being forgotten. The scene triggers automatically after you complete the final page. You earn around 25 stars for a full first run through Wildwoods.
  7. After the Big Discovery scene, Mr. E's Monocle is introduced — a magical lens that Bowser Jr. accidentally used to teleport himself into the book. The stage select returns to the world map with Mountaintops now visible, locked at 20 stars.
Tip Even the most common-looking creature (the Crazee Dayzee reappears in almost every chapter) has multiple Discovery entries for different interactions. Completing them all here saves backtracking and builds your star total fastest.

Chapter 2

Mountaintops

Rocky habitatCliffhanger creaturesGround-Pound Wand

Golden path

  1. Mountaintops requires 20 stars to enter. The pages here feature steep rocky terrain — many creatures cling to walls or nest in high ledges. Flutter Jump is critical; time your double-jump carefully to reach upper platforms rather than throwing eggs upwards from below.
  2. New creatures in Mountaintops include cliff-dwellers that only appear when startled — run past them first, then double back to interact while they are in their revealed state. Standing still near their hiding spots will not trigger the appear animation; you must move past them first.
  3. Ground-pounding rock formations shakes loose eggs and sometimes reveals concealed creatures. The Ground-Pound Wand tool (unlocked at ten total Smiley Flowers) marks shake-points on the ground with a faint shimmer — very useful for finding burrow creatures on the mountain pages.
  4. Bowser Jr. makes a mischievous appearance mid-chapter and scrambles a page, displacing creatures from their usual positions. Walk through the disrupted page as normal — the creatures are still there, just shuffled. Complete all interactions to restore the page layout.
  5. The Mountaintops Big Discovery reveals that some creatures in Mr. E migrate between habitats seasonally. This unlocks a bonus mechanic: returning to an earlier chapter (Wildwoods) will occasionally show different creatures in the same pages — optional exploration for completionists.
  6. Completing Mountaintops awards roughly 50 stars total. If your cumulative count has not reached 65 (needed for Seaside), revisit Wildwoods and interact with any creatures you missed on earlier pages — even partial Discovery completions award stars.
Tip Several Mountaintops creatures won't reveal themselves unless Yoshi runs past their hiding spot first. Make a first pass across the page at full sprint to flush them out, then return to interact with each one.

Chapter 3

Seaside

Shore & waterKamek's trapCraft Eye

Golden path

  1. Seaside opens at 65 stars. The pages here split between sandy shore areas and shallow water pages where Yoshi paddles automatically. Water creatures react differently from land ones — licking them up requires approaching from the side. Frontal approaches cause them to dive and disappear briefly.
  2. Throwing eggs underwater behaves differently: eggs wobble in the current and travel in a slight arc. Aim slightly ahead of moving targets and use a higher angle than on land. Several Seaside Discoveries require landing three accurate egg hits on fast-moving fish — patience is more effective than frantic throwing.
  3. The Craft Eye tool (unlocked at fifteen total Smiley Flowers) adds a viewfinder overlay — tap the camera button to scan the environment and highlight creatures camouflaged as background decoration. Several Seaside pages have creatures disguised as sea-rocks or coral that are invisible to the naked eye.
  4. Kamek appears for the first time in Seaside and attempts to turn some of the page's creatures invisible. The Craft Eye tool immediately reveals them, making this section much easier with it equipped. Without the Craft Eye, invisible creatures can still be found by walking into them and listening for a soft chime — they are always present, just hidden.
  5. The Seaside Big Discovery ties into the overarching story: Mr. E explains that the professor who built him had been cataloguing sea creatures before disappearing. This adds urgency to completing the encyclopaedia and awards a substantial star bonus.
  6. After Seaside, your cumulative star count should sit around 110–120. Settled Valley requires 114 stars — if you are slightly short, any Wildwoods or Mountaintops pages with uncompleted interactions will give you a few extra stars very quickly.
Heads up When Kamek turns creatures invisible, your Discovery count for the page will show as incomplete even if the area looks empty. Tap the camera button with Craft Eye equipped to scan for hidden outlines, or move Yoshi slowly across the page and listen for the soft chime that plays when he touches an invisible creature.

Chapter 4

Settled Valley

Burrowing creaturesKamek tears pagesCreature Call

Golden path

  1. Settled Valley requires 114 stars. The environment is a sun-dappled rural valley with rolling terrain, long grass, and muddy patches. Many creatures here burrow underground and only surface when approached from a specific angle or after Yoshi makes a sound — stomp near burrow mounds (small raised dirt circles) to coax them up.
  2. The Creature Call tool (unlocked at twenty total Smiley Flowers) plays a gentle sound that attracts nearby shy creatures automatically. It is particularly effective in Settled Valley where burrowing and grass-hiding creatures are most abundant — use it at the start of each new page to draw out anything nearby.
  3. Kamek makes a concerted attempt to tear pages out of Mr. E to prevent Yoshi completing the encyclopaedia. Several Settled Valley pages have a torn corner with missing creatures. Search the entire page including ledges above and behind the camera — Kamek hides the displaced creatures on secret perches. They are always on the same page; none are permanently lost.
  4. Bowser Jr. and Kamek have a falling-out mid-chapter after Bowser Jr. refuses to leave the book. He is beginning to genuinely enjoy exploring Mr. E's pages and is now causing chaos purely for fun. This does not change gameplay but adds context to the final chapter's events.
  5. The Settled Valley Big Discovery involves locating the Professor's old research notes within the pages — four fragments of paper hidden in the level geometry. Poochy sniffs out each note location. All four must be found on the same page visit to trigger the scene.
  6. After completing Settled Valley your cumulative star count should reach around 160–165. Bug Country requires 167 stars — you are very close. Any leftover Discoveries in earlier chapters will comfortably close the gap.
Tip When Kamek tears a page corner, the missing creatures are always on high ledges above the normal camera height. Use Flutter Jump to reach the upper corners of each page and look for creatures sitting on stone outcroppings or inside cave alcoves. Poochy barks upward when one is above.

Chapter 5

Bug Country

Pebble-size YoshiBewilder BirdBewilder Feather

Golden path

  1. Bug Country requires 167 stars and is the most unique chapter in the game. The moment Yoshi enters these pages he is reduced to the size of a pebble — blades of grass tower overhead like ancient redwoods, rain puddles become swimming lakes, and even an ordinary ant is a formidable obstacle. Flutter Jump, egg throws, and licking all remain functional, but the scale changes the strategy.
  2. At pebble-scale, eggs have an exaggerated arc — aim with a higher angle than normal to compensate for the increased drop. Many large insects cannot be licked directly; you must throw eggs into their faces to get them to lower their heads to Yoshi's height before you can make contact.
  3. Watch for rain sequences — when you see ripples on the ground, move to higher ground immediately. The water does not damage Yoshi but will carry him off-screen if swept away from the page, forcing a restart at the page entrance. Poochy barks urgently at the start of each rain event; follow his direction.
  4. The Bewilder Bird is first properly encountered here — a magnificent bird-like creature with shifting plumage that can transform to look exactly like any other creature in the book. When you first see it, it is mimicking a large beetle. Approach from behind (not from the front) to observe it without triggering a flee response.
  5. To complete the Bewilder Bird's Discovery you must trigger all five of its transformations: lick the beetle form, throw an egg at the grasshopper form, ground-pound near the caterpillar form, approach slowly the butterfly form, and finally stand completely still while it approaches in its true bird form — this last transformation only happens if Yoshi is stationary for about ten seconds.
  6. Completing the Bewilder Bird Discovery earns the Bewilder Feather — a memento the bird gives Yoshi willingly. This item unlocks the events of Chapter 6. The chapter ends with an unusually warm cut-scene showing the Bewilder Bird and Yoshi as allies.
Do this now The Bewilder Feather is required to unlock the final pages in Chapter 6. You can return to Bug Country if you leave without it, but it is considerably easier to complete all five Bewilder Bird transformations during your first visit. Take your time on the Bewilder Bird's page — especially the stand-still transformation, which takes ten full seconds.

Chapter 6

Remote Isle

Bewilder Feather neededBowser Jr. bossGiant Crazee Dayzee

Golden path

  1. Remote Isle requires 218 stars. The pages here are rugged coastal terrain — rough stone beaches, sea-caves, and clifftop habitats. Complete all Discoveries on the early pages as you have in every chapter; the final encounter is gated by a story trigger, not a star count.
  2. Bowser Jr. has barricaded himself inside the final pages and is determined not to leave. His presence creates ink walls that block the right path mid-chapter. Ink walls dissolve once you complete enough Discovery interactions on each page — work through each page systematically and do not skip creatures.
  3. Near the end of Remote Isle you reach a locked page — Mr. E is distressed and cannot open it. The Bewilder Feather activates here automatically, calling the Bewilder Bird to return. If you did not collect the Bewilder Feather in Chapter 5, you must return there now before you can proceed.
  4. The unlocked final page triggers the Bowser Jr. boss encounter. Prepare a full clutch of six eggs before proceeding — egg refills are available inside the fight but only between phases. See the Bowser Jr. boss card below for the complete strategy.
  5. After defeating Bowser Jr. and Kamek, the book's final secret is revealed: the Giant Crazee Dayzee — the largest creature in the entire encyclopaedia, accidentally turned enormous by Bowser Jr.'s magical interference — is the true final challenge. The Bewilder Bird allies with Yoshi for this fight. See the Giant Crazee Dayzee boss card below.
  6. After the Giant Crazee Dayzee is calmed — not defeated; the Discovery entry notes it was never truly hostile, only confused and frightened by Bowser Jr.'s magic — Mr. E's final pages are filled in. The encyclopaedia closes, Bowser Jr. is safely returned to the outside world, and the end credits roll over illustrations of every creature Yoshi discovered.
Do this now You cannot pass the locked page in Remote Isle without the Bewilder Feather from Chapter 5's Bewilder Bird Discovery. Check your items before entering Remote Isle — if it is missing, return to Bug Country and complete all five Bewilder Bird interactions.
Tip The Bowser Jr. and Giant Crazee Dayzee encounters run back-to-back with no item screen between them. Carry six eggs into the Bowser Jr. fight and use the Phase 1/2 transition refill generously — you will need a full clutch for Phase 3 and for the Dayzee fight that follows.
Boss Bowser Jr. (Book Rampage) Remote Isle

Bowser Jr. uses his paintbrush to coat pages in ink that blocks your movement. Keep moving constantly and never stand still on coloured patches.

Top up before: Complete all Remote Isle Discoveries before triggering the final encounter — you cannot return mid-fight.

Phase 1 — Paintbrush Barrage
Bowser Jr. swoops on his Junior Clown Car and flings ink blobs across the page. Each blob creates a slippery black patch. Dodge the blobs and pelt him with eggs when he hovers low — three hits push him back. The ink patches clear after a few seconds.
Phase 2 — Mechakoopa Deployment
Bowser Jr. winds up and drops Mechakoopas that march in rows. Ground-pound the Mechakoopas to turn them into throwable shells, then use those shells to hit Bowser Jr. when he rises above egg range. Two shell hits end this phase.
Phase 3 — Kamek Joins
Kamek appears alongside Bowser Jr. and enchants the page borders so they crumble if Yoshi falls off. Kamek flies a random Z-pattern and fires magic bolts — dodge by moving towards him, not away. Hit Kamek three times with eggs to send him retreating, leaving Bowser Jr. alone. Then land two more egg hits on Bowser Jr. to trigger the transition.

Where to heal: The fight checkpoints after Phase 2 completes — if you lose all health in Phase 3 you restart there, not from the beginning.

Easier tactic: Carry a full clutch of six eggs into the fight. Egg refill opportunities between Phase 1 and Phase 2 are generous — use them. Poochy barks to warn you when Kamek is charging a bolt in Phase 3.

Retreat: You can pause and quit to the chapter select — all prior star progress is saved.

Reward: Bowser Jr. retreats; the final boss sequence begins
Boss Giant Crazee Dayzee Remote Isle

The Giant Crazee Dayzee's lullaby puts Yoshi to sleep instantly if you are in the sound cone. Always position yourself behind or to the side of its head.

Top up before: The Bewilder Bird joins automatically — this fight immediately follows the Bowser Jr. encounter.

Phase 1 — Lullaby Stomp
The Giant Crazee Dayzee sings and stomps forward. Stand behind its legs and throw eggs at the glowing petal on the back of its head — three hits daze it. While it is dazed, ground-pound the top of its head (jump and press down) to deal real damage.
Phase 2 — Bewilder Bird Transformation
The Bewilder Bird transforms into a giant version of each creature from Mr. E's earlier chapters to distract the Dayzee. Use these distraction windows — about four seconds each — to hit the back-petal with eggs and follow up with a ground-pound. Watch for the petal to glow orange before throwing.
Phase 3 — Final Charge
The Giant Crazee Dayzee fills the page with petals that float down and put Yoshi to sleep on contact. Run constantly (never stand still) and focus egg throws on the now-exposed giant petal on the creature's chest. Four hits here — no ground-pound needed — end the fight.

Where to heal: No mid-boss checkpoint in Phase 3, but you restart from Phase 3 if you reach it before running out of health.

Easier tactic: In Phase 3 the sleeping petals float slowly — run left then right in a wide arc and they will never catch you. Only stop to line up your egg throw, then run again immediately.

Retreat: Quitting saves your star progress but resets the boss to Phase 1.

Reward: End credits — Yoshi restores Mr. E's knowledge and returns Bowser Jr. to the outside world
